The Westside boys golf team enters the Metro Tournament at Benson Park focused on defending their title and executing under pressure in one of the biggest events of the season.
“Everything we do from day one in the golf program prepares us for our last three events of the year, and metros is the first one,” head coach Jered Hellman said.
The Warriors have spent the entire season building consistency through pressure situations, competitive tournaments and steady improvement across the lineup. That experience has helped develop confidence and trust within the team heading into a course they know well, but one that still demands precision on every shot.
“Our course management and our mental focus will be the key to winning our fourth metro tournament in a row,” Hellman said.
Westside understands that the metro field is loaded with talent, meaning there is little margin for error. Staying composed after mistakes, avoiding big numbers, and capitalizing on scoring chances will be essential if they want to stay in contention throughout the tournament.
“We are as talented as every team there, and when we play with our mentality of ‘we over me,’ we are a lethal golf team,” Hellman said.
At Benson, the biggest challenge comes on and around the green, where speed and grain can make putting extremely difficult.
“Because of that, short game control will be one of the most important factors in separating teams during the tournament,” Hellman said.
Also players need to be disciplined with shots and putting the ball correctly where it needs to go.
“Players will also need to be extremely disciplined with approach shots, focusing on leaving the ball in the correct position rather than simply attacking pins,” Hellman said. “Being above the hole can quickly turn manageable putts into difficult downhill attempts that lead to bogeys.”
“Our goals have remained unchanged all season,” Hellman said. “Our goal is to win our fourth consecutive metro title and get one victory closer to catching Prep on the all-time victory list.”
Westside enters metros with a clear identity built all season long staying composed, trusting preparation and executing together under championship pressure.
