Seventy-three. Twice.
For most golfers, it’s a solid round. For sophomore Niko Reyes, it’s becoming a standard—and a sign of something bigger brewing early in the season.
At the Millard North Invitational at Miracle Hills, Reyes competed in the four spot and delivered a 73. A week later, he moved up to the three spot at the Pius X Invitational at Firethorn in Lincoln and matched it. Different course, same result—early consistency that’s quickly establishing him as a key piece of the lineup.
“I’ve just been trying to stay consistent and trust my game,” Reyes said. “Moving up in the lineup is cool, but I’m really just focused on doing my part for the team.”
That steady approach is exactly what fourth-year head coach Jered Hellman has seen from the sophomore.
“Niko has elevated his game to another level, he has proven through two events that he will be an integral part of our lineup,” Hellman said.
While Reyes’ scores have been impressive, it’s his presence within the team that continues to stand out, not just to coaches, but to his teammates as well.
“I see Niko a lot outside of golf and I’d say we’re pretty close,” junior Knox Pocras said. “It’s been really cool to see him progress from this season compared to last season. Even though he is one of the younger guys on the team, he has a lot of poise and holds himself with the confidence of a veteran. It’s a lot of fun to play golf with Niko.”
That mix of confidence and composure has helped Reyes settle into varsity competition early in the season, but his growth hasn’t just come on the course.
“Last year taught me a lot, especially balancing everything,” Reyes said. “I’ve taken that seriously, and I think it’s helped me play more confidently this season.”
Hellman has seen that maturity firsthand, pointing to Reyes’ development beyond golf as one of the most meaningful parts of his progression.
“Last season, classroom work and grades were something we had to focus on a lot with Niko,” Hellman said. “He and I and his family along with counselors at school worked together as a team to help Niko navigate being a varsity athlete as a freshman. I am beyond proud to say that Niko made the high honor roll in the first semester of his sophomore year. When college coaches start calling me about Niko, I can now tell them he excels in the classroom. This to me is more exciting than anything that he can ever accomplish on the golf course. Golf will take Niko to amazing places and with his current dedication to the classroom he will have numerous doors open for him in the future”
That growth, both on and off the course, reflects a player who is still just scratching the surface of his potential.
“Niko is a very confident young man and loves the team environment, he has a really good sense of humor and gets along great with his teammates,” Hellman said.
Through two invitationals, Reyes has already shown he can produce under pressure. But as his coach and teammates make clear, his impact stretches far beyond the scorecard—and if his early season is any indication, this is just the beginning.
