Senior Grace Fixley has been making her mark on the Westside girls track team this year in various running events. Her improvement and hard work has shown off as she has received multiple season bests at recent track meets. Getting better at an event is always a goal for an athlete but sometimes goals can be more than just physical abilities.
“[My goal is] to have fun and make the most of my last season with Westside, as well as PR!” Fixley said.
Goals can also change throughout the season. Starting off, athletes usually have an idea of what they want to accomplish but changes can happen all the time. For some, things change but for others they stay the same. Fixley showed that when discussing final season goals.
“My final goals are to continue trying my best and having fun with friends and working hard in practices,” Fixley said.
Just like goals, the future can be uncertain but that is not the entire case for Fixley. She will be attending Creighton University in the fall to study business but she is still deciding if she is going to continue her track career. High school can shape a person in many ways but no matter what it will always leave an impact on the students. Fixley talked about how much Westside means to her.
“Westside is such an amazing place where I have met my best friends, had so many memories, and have been so blessed to be a student at,” Fixley said.
Not only do schools hope to impact students, but students hope to impact the school as well. Fixley explained how she has tried to make Westside a better place.
“I hope that I have impacted Westside to make it more fun and for the students to look forward to coming to everyday, just as so many people do for me,” Fixley said.
Being an upperclassmen on a sports team leaves a lot of responsibility. One of those responsibilities is making sure the lowerclassmen are set up for success. Veteran athletes are always such a big inspiration that younger athletes can learn a lot from. Fixley shared her thoughts about what she wants the younger athletes to remember.
“I hope to leave behind the ideals of consistency and determination to the younger girls to let them know that you should never give up,” Fixley said. “Keep going and the results will come with, and always remember to have fun.”
Leaving behind a team you have known for so long is never easy. It is the memories of all the good times that make the goodbye easier. Fixley will be carrying her best track memories with her as her final season as a Warrior reaches the finish line.
“I would say all of the little memories of jokes in practice and going to get a sweet treat after meets have been my favorite memories, and have made the best times in track,” Fixley said.
She may have been chasing seconds trying to get a PR all season but the memories she has built along the way will last her a lifetime.
