From the sand in the pit to the batons used in relays, senior Jocelyn Evans has remained an exciting leader on the Westside girls track team. Evans has competed on the team since she was a freshman and has proved that hard work pays off. She has grown in many ways since the first meet her freshman year but no matter what there is always room for improvement.
“My goals were to improve in my events and stay focused” Evans said.
Improving in events is always an important goal to have for an athlete but some of the best things sports can offer come from outside of the events. Evans supported this idea when talking about her ongoing goals for the season.
“My final goals are to PR in my events, have a good time, and support my teammates” Evans said.
Evans is not planning on furthering her track career in the future, but she will be attending San Diego State University to major in international business. There is no doubt that her time at Westside has influenced her in a positive way.
“Westside has impacted me in many ways beyond academics” Evans said. “It has helped me grow as a person, build confidence, and learn more about who I am. I’ve become stronger, more confident, and more sure of myself.”
The impact a school can have on one person is widely seen but what most do not focus on is the impact the students have on the school and the community. Students can make a very big difference in the stance of a school and every student hopes to be a good representative of the place they grew up in. Evans has been a wonderful representation of District 66 and her impact will be remembered.
“I’ve impacted Westside by being myself, growing through every experience, and showing others the importance of resilience” Evans said. “I’ve learned from challenges, stayed true to who I am, and brought my own energy and perspective to the people around me. Even in small ways I hope I’ve inspired people to be confident and keep growing.”
High school can be one of the hardest times for teenagers but having a school and community that is supportive can change every experience. What Evans wishes to teach others demonstrates her understanding of this common occurrence.
“I hope to leave behind confidence, positivity, and the reminder to have fun” Evans said.
Having to leave what you have known for so long is never easy. As the track season comes to an end, Evans reflected on her favorite memory from her track career.
“Being an underclassman at the meets with the girls who have now graduated” Evans said. “They made every meet so fun and memorable and made me love being part of the team.”
Evans has been a memorable part of the team from her starting blocks to these new senior walks. Her influence and inspiration will continue to be a part of the team even as she goes on to bigger and better things in the future.
