As the track and field season enters its final stretch, the Warriors’ throwing group has quietly become one of the most competitive units in the state, with senior Owen James being at the center of that rise. Currently ranked 17th in the state in shot put with a top mark of 15.06 meters, the senior thrower has turned his final season into a statement of leadership and consistency.
Standing in the circle, James brings a presence that is hard to ignore. Much like his role as a two-way starter on the football field, where he has earned an opportunity to continue his career at Northwest Missouri State, he thrives on intensity and physicality. That same mindset translates directly into his approach as a thrower, where every rep and every meet carries purpose.
James’ impact, however, extends far beyond his marks.
As one of the leaders of the throws group, he has helped shape the culture of the program into one built on accountability and effort. His approach is simple but effective: set the standard and let others rise to meet it.
“Being a leader in the throws program means setting a standard of hard work and determination,” James said. “I want to help create an environment that is comfortable and hardworking.”
That balance has been a defining trait of this year’s group. Practices are competitive, but supportive. Teammates push each other, but also celebrate progress. James’ steady presence has played a major role in building that environment, one that continues to elevate the entire program.
His journey to this point has not come without challenges.
After missing a significant portion of his junior season due to injury, James entered this year with something to prove. Instead of letting the setback define him, he used it as motivation, returning stronger and more focused.
Throwing coach Zach Maloley believes that resilience has been one of the most important parts of James’ development.
“What stands out most about Owen’s growth is his resilience,” Maloley said. “He missed a significant portion of his junior year and is still in a great position to have an exceptional season.”
That determination shows up every time James steps into the circle. His mental approach is one of the most unique aspects of his performance, being fueled by his controlled intensity and focus.
“Mentally, before I throw, I feel like I’m about to get in a fight,” James said. “I like to be intense when I throw.”
That mindset has helped him stay locked in during big moments, turning pressure into energy. In a sport where small improvements can make a major difference, that edge has helped him steadily climb the ranks this season.
But beyond the results, it is James’ day-to-day habits that have set him apart.
“Owen leads by example,” Maloley said. “He makes the entire program better by how he conducts himself.”
By getting in extra work after practices, maintaining focus during meets, and giving advice to younger teammates, James has made himself a role model within the program. His work ethic, in particular, has become one of the defining characteristics of his success.
“He has an exceptional work ethic,” Maloley added. “That’s what separates him from the competition and has a significant impact on the team culture.”
That culture has been clear throughout the season, as the throws group continues to improve week after week. With athletes feeding off each other’s energy and effort, the standard James has helped establish continues to push the group forward.
As the season progresses, James has his sights set on finishing strong.
“My goal is to throw high 50s and give myself an opportunity to compete for a state championship,” James said.
It is a goal that reflects both confidence and ambition, as he looks to close out his high school career on a high note. With each meet, he continues to move closer, building momentum at the right time.
At the same time, James is preparing for the next chapter. His future at Northwest Missouri State football is already set, but his focus remains on making the most of his final opportunities in the throwing circle.
As he approaches the final meets of his senior season, James hopes to leave a lasting impact on the program: one defined not just by his performances, but by the standard he helped create.
With postseason competition on the horizon, the Warriors will look to carry their momentum forward, and James will play a key role in that push. If his season so far is any indication, his combination of leadership, resilience, and intensity will continue to drive both his individual success and the growth of the team around him.
