For sophomore Niko Reyes, golf isn’t just a sport it is something he’s been surrounded by his entire life.
Growing up with a father who is a professional golfer, Reyes was introduced to the game at a young age. Being around golf so often helped shape not only his skills, but also his passion for the sport. Now, as a varsity player for Westside High School, Reyes is beginning to turn that passion into real results.
“I played decently on Friday. I shot a 73,” Reyes said.
While the score reflects a strong performance, the round didn’t come without challenges. In one unexpected moment, Reyes lost the lead after his ball hit a sprinkler head something completely out of his control.
“The toughest moment was when I hit a sprinkler head and it cost me the lead,” Reyes said. “It was so random, all I could do was laugh and move on.”
That ability to stay composed highlights one of Reyes’s biggest strengths, his mindset. Instead of letting frustration take over, he focuses on what he can control and continues to compete. His confidence is especially clear in one part of his game.
“I was most proud of how I played off the tee. I felt really strong there,” Reyes said.
Preparation also plays a major role in his success. Before each round, Reyes takes time to mentally get ready by studying the course and conditions.
“Before a round, I like to take a second and look at the course and the conditions so I know what to expect,” Reyes said.
As Reyes continues to develop, his goals are set high not just for himself, but for his team as well.
“My goal is to win state with the team and bring it all home,” Reyes said.
Looking ahead, Reyes isn’t just thinking about this season. He has long term goals that go beyond high school competition.
“I want to take golf seriously and hopefully play professionally one day,” Reyes said.
Westside head coach Jered Hellman sees that potential and believes Reyes is ready to take a big step forward this season.
“Niko Reyes is an extremely talented sophomore that has clear goals and aspirations on where he wants golf to take him,” Hellman said. “Niko had to pay his dues his freshman year with some highs and lows, but I look for him to make some serious noise this season. His name will be known quickly amongst our competitors.”
With a strong foundation, clear goals, and the mindset to handle both success and setbacks, Reyes is positioning himself as a key player for Westside and someone to watch as the season unfolds.
