Omaha is rich with authentic Mexican restaurants and trucks scattered all throughout the city, the heart of them lying in South Omaha. While most offer relatively good food, each needs to do something different to stand out amongst their competitors; this is exactly what The Churro Spot does.
The Churro Spot started off as a small food truck in 2016. While churros were originally the only thing on the menu, but over time they added tacos, tortas, elote and other Mexican dishes to their offerings. After the success of their truck, they opened a Brick and Mortar location in 2022, located at 50th and Saddle Creek Road. The building is shared with Oleaver’s Pub, which The Churro Spot has partnered with to serve their food as well.
I was intrigued by the wide variety of dishes that The Churro Spot served, so I ordered carry out one afternoon. While I’d usually try to dine in for a restaurant review, I moreso wanted to relax that day. Based on the appearance of the restaurant, however, I would’ve been good dining in. The space is small, but colorful and relaxing. There are a few tables and booths spread across the two rooms in the restaurant, and a small TV with a free chips and salsa bar for dine in customers stood off in a corner.
I arrived at the restaurant just a few minutes after placing my pickup order, but still had to wait about 5 more minutes for it to be ready. It wasn’t a huge delay, and the food was still hot and fresh even after my drive home.
I spent about $23 in total, which got me three tacos, an order of elote, a 10 inch churro and a Mexican Coke, which I felt was a reasonable price. I started out with the tacos: two carne asada and one chorizo. The carne asada tacos came with a specialty avocado sauce added to them, which enhanced the tacos from standard to great, and their green and red sauces that came on the side were equally delicious. Even without the avocado sauce, the chorizo taco still held its own, and was a great main course.
Admittedly, I’m not a massive fan of elote, but what I got from The Churro Spot impressed me enough to get it again. A full cob of corn, mixed with cheese and spices had a great flavor combo. I do wish, however, there was extra spices added, as it didn’t have the full kick I was hoping for. It was good enough to where I’d gladly eat it again, despite not being in love with the typical version of the dish.
The churros ended up having a bit of a mishap, though. Despite ordering one Oreo churro, I received a few mini versions of the original flavor. I’m not sure if they were just out of the flavor or if it was an accident, but it wasn’t what I expected. To make up for it at least, the amount of smaller churros that they gave me was much more than the single Oreo would’ve been for the same price. They were also fresh, with plenty of cinnamon and filling, still making them a great dessert.
Even with the few minor inconveniences, The Churro Spot still impressed me during my visit. Everything was fresh and the workers were friendly. Each item felt expertly made, with no sacrifices in quality to focus on another dish. The Churro Spot rises above other restaurants in quality and is delicious enough to justify a return soon.
