The Westside varsity football team is set to begin its season this Thursday, aiming for a seventh consecutive appearance in the state championship game. The Warriors will open at home against Omaha North, a team widely regarded as one of the strongest in Class A.
Senior defensive back Bryson Williams said the team is eager for the challenge.
“I mean, I’m very excited,” Williams said. “They’re a good team, they gave us a good shot last year. So, I mean, there’s no better way to open it up with a solid team. I think we prepared well in the offseason and we’re ready to go for it.”
Omaha North enters the season ranked third in the state. Williams said Westside holds respect for the Vikings’ coaching and consistency.
“I respect them. I respect Coach Martin,” Williams said. “They always have a good squad. No matter how much talent they have, they usually make a deep run.”
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday at Kennick Stadium. The theme for the game is “White Out,” and students and fans are encouraged to wear white and support the Warriors.
