The Westside girls soccer team is off to a great start this season. They are sitting at a 6-6 record and have taken some big wins this week, against Millard West and Lincoln Southeast. They will wrap up this season with a game against Westview and will head into districts in 2 weeks.
Coach Nathan May talks about how the season has been going, and how he expects the rest of the season to go. They have been doing really well and want to make it as far as they can into the post season.
“We expect to give everything in our remaining games and do everything we can to get to state where I believe we can give any team a game,” May said
Mia Urosevich is a big leader on the team, she is a big part of the reason why the girls win. She is a strong forward and scores goals for the team. The girls lost to Lincoln Southeast 3-1, she talks about how she thinks the game went in general and what the team is looking to do for the rest of the season.
“I think the game against Lincoln southeast definitely was not our best but we need to use it as motivation to get better results the rest of the season,” Urosevich said “I want us to be able to go as far as we can and be content with knowing we gave everything we had to give”
Nora Johnson is also a senior on the varsity squad, and she leads the team in goals this season. She talks about what happened in the Lincoln Southeast game.
“I think the Lincoln Southeast game was a frustrating loss but it was also motivating because we know they weren’t a better team than us,” Johnson said.
There are many strengths the girls have as a team, but also some minor weaknesses. Coach May talks about what they have been doing well as a team, but also what they need to work on heading into districts.
“We have some very good attacking players, and very good defenders. We have had a hard time scoring goals early on but I hope those issues are behind us. We can always improve playing in a more connected way attacking and defending and we will continue to improve,” May said.
Urosevich is one of 11 seniors on the team, she talks about the best memories she has from this season, and what she wants the outcome of the season to be, as she will finish her high school soccer career with many of her best friends.
“Some of my favorite memories are our group hang outs because we are all super close and hang out almost every weekend,” Urosevich said.
There is lots of senior leadership especially by the forwards on the team. Johnson is one of the forwards and the other is Urosevich. They both talk about the mindset they are looking to have.
Johnson talks about what her mindset is and what she is working to help lead the others in the post season.
“My mindset going into districts is that we will have to work super hard and it won’t be easy but when we play at our best we can beat anyone,” Johnson said “I can continue to stay positive and lead by example on the field as a leader,”
Urosevich explains the mindset she has going into postseason and final games in the regular season.
“Our mindset is to keep being positive and stay very focused on our goals and what we want to accomplish,” Urosevich said.
The final game versus Westview will complete their regular season. Then girls will head into districts to try and continue their season into the state tournament.
They will play Westview on Tuesday Apr. 28, 2026.
