When Senior Sadie Rogers began swimming for Westside four years ago, she had no idea how quickly she would become a key player to the program over her outstanding high school career.
“I am most proud of qualifying for finals at state my freshman year,” Rogers says. “I wasn’t even expecting my state entries to get accepted, so to place in the top 16 during prelims was super exciting. I was able to score points and help the team win our state title that year.”
Her contributions were only beginning. Her junior year, Rogers’ 400 free relay was named to the All-American Team, and she added her final contribution as a Warrior this year by posting the top time in Nebraska for the 100 breast.
Her love for Westside swimming extends beyond her times in the pool.
“Being able to be a leader and a part of a team culture where every single person felt valued and supported made this season unforgettable, and is just one of the many reasons why I will miss the program,” she explains.
Rogers set an example for her teammates with her disciplined training process.
“I mainly focus on just trusting the work that I put in,” Rogers explains. “It is really easy to become hyper-focused on a goal that you might have, but remembering to appreciate how you get there is super important. When you enjoy what you do, it shows on the blocks.”
Freshman teammate Whitney Leach has seen it all behind the scenes.
“Whenever we do really hard sets, she seems unfazed and so calm and in control,” Leach says. “She is always a great leader both in and out of the pool, she just always knows what to say to everyone, and really helps our team feel more together.”
Rogers and Leach swam the 100 breaststroke every meet, and grew a close bond throughout the season.
“Swimming alongside Sadie has been very special this season because it’s my first and her last,” Leach said. “I think getting to spend it together and become better friends with her has been so enjoyable.”
Rogers will continue to compete at the next level when she swims for South Dakota State, but she will always be a Warrior at heart.
“I hope to leave behind a legacy of hard work, passion, dedication and selflessness,” Rogers says. “I love this team so much and, if anything, I hope to pass on the pride of representing Westside.”
