As winter sports seasons enter their final stretch, the girls dive team is showing the results of months of hard work and dedication. With only about one month left in a lot of their diving careers, the Warriors are working hard to continue improving and also enjoying their last dives as Westside Warriors.
Many divers on the Westside team started diving at the beginning of high school or halfway through. Since then they have gained many skills they can use on and off of the diving board.
“I’ve made some improvement with all my dives over the last couple meets, but the one I’m most proud of is my front full twist,” Sabina Rasulova said.
“This dive used to give me some mental blocks at the end of last season but now I consider it one of my best dives. I also have improved in my double front because I’ve been letting myself be calm and patient on the board which makes me go higher and overall makes the dive much easier for me.”
Dive can often seem as if it is an individual sport. But it is far from that. A mental game the sport can often be and without support from teammates it can make diving a lot more difficult than it already is.
“We always cheer each other on, and many of us do the same or very similar dives so we also give each other tips.” Rasulova said.
“We also practice together every day and we make it a fun environment so it makes it feel like it’s not even a practice but an activity that’s fun for us all.”
Sometimes to have the best road ahead, overworking the hard skills isn’t the focus, by mastering the simple ones and having a few great dives the future is bright.
“For my next meet I have some time to work on all my dives so I will be definitely upgrading some of my dives to get my difficulty score up,” Rasulova said. “I also just want to clean up some of my basic dives so I can score higher on them and make a good foundation for harder dives.”
The girls’ team will continue to work hard for the rest of their season, aiming to make it to state!
