The boys and girls swim teams continue on with their successful seasons. During winter break the boys had a phenomenal meet against Lincoln East. The Warriors blew the Spartans out of the water defeating the state champs 410.5 to 238.5. Pearson Kratky won the 200 individual medley, now leading the state with a time of 1:56.96 . Junior Spencer Thom also leads the state winning the 100 freestyle with a time of 21.97. Along with this the boys lead the state in the 200 freestyle relay. On the girls side, the team came runner-up to the Spartans. The Warriors also have girls who lead the state. Berkeley Gemar holds the leading spot in the 100 Back stroke with a time of 56.79 seconds. Senior Sadie Rogers leads the state in the 100 breast with a time of 1:06.86.
The boys team emphasized how big the Lincoln East invitational win was for them.
“Over the winter break we had the LSE invite in which us boys won for the first time since 2018 while also winning the combined score overall with girls,” Will Cartwright said.
The boys also had a dual over the break against Elkhorn, this meet being big for the team.
“Our Elkhorn dual was also another huge win for us boys. In all of these meets, each one of us swam with our hearts bringing home a win no matter how big or small the meet.” Cartwright said.
Recently Westside had a home meet against Fremont, both girls and boys. This was a big meet for the Warriors with it being senior night.
“Yesterday night’s meet we had a huge win beating Fremont by a lot of course making senior night even better,” Cartwright said.
The girls also had many great meets over the holidays. While this is often a challenging point in the season for many teams, that has not been the case for Westside.
“The past couple of meets have gone very well, we are in the peak of training and still swimming fast which is amazing,” Gwen Fonda said. “I would say the thing our team has done the best in is staying positive even though we’re all exhausted.”
Fonda has learned that by working on the little things progress is constantly made.
“Every race is an opportunity to improve and get coach feedback to see what you need to focus on to get to where you want to be,” Fonda said. “One thing I’ll take away from the past meets is that I need to fix some small things in my stroke that will help me be the best I can once we get to the bigger meets.”
Along with the girls, the boys team is staying humble knowing there is always room to get better.
“One thing we have taken away is there still so much room for improvement,” Cartwright said.
“Our focus for these upcoming meets and practices will focus strictly on full effort rather than swimming through the motions, hopefully boosting our performance at more competitive, larger meets.”
The Warriors will take on the Mustangs this Monday 13 at Millard North.
