Number two Westside continued their early season dominance as they shutout the Millard West Wildcats 51-0 on the Warriors homecoming night. This is the second week in a row that Westside hasn’t allowed a point and the last time they did was in garbage time in week one against Omaha North. Westside handed Millard West their second big loss in as many weeks with both Westside and Millard South putting up a combined 116 points without allowing a single one to the Wildcats.
The game started well as it could for Westside, forcing a three and out on the first drive and then immediately scoring a rushing touchdown with Tay Tay Jenkins to get the Warriors on the board. The next Warrior drive was something you don’t see often, on the first play Braylen Warren completed a long pass to receiver Mo Purify II but it was called back for holding. On the very next play Warren then made a screen pass to tight end Quinton Warren who took it all the way for what would’ve been a touchdown, but it also got called back for a holding, Warren then completed a pass to Eli Johnson over the middle which he took about 50 yards after the catch for a longest play of the game which was 77 yards and there was no flag to stop it. Westside tacked on a field goal midway through the second quarter along with a touchdown to Purify then with about a minute in a half left Warren found Millard West transfer Bryson Williams for his one and only catch for the night but it was 39 yard touchdown catch to make the score 30-0 going into halftime.
Just like the first half, the second was all Westside. Jenkins rushed right out of halftime for a 70 yard touchdown immediately, then toward the end of the third quarter Jenkins once again found a gap and found the end zone this time from 50 yards out to end the scoring for Westside’s offense. In the fourth it was the Warriors defense that got in on the scoring with Adrian Gonzales taking a Wildcat fumble 60 yards on the scoop and score to break 50 points for Westside taking homecoming night winning 51-0.
“It meant a lot to win,” Williams said “We had a good week of practice and it feels good just to see our work pay off.”
The Warriors offense was humming all throughout the game, quarterback Braylen Warren had his best start of the season throwing for 150 yards and three touchdowns, along with Warren the always sure handed Tay Tay Jenkins did what he did best and ran all over the Wildcat defense for 226 yards and three touchdowns of his own. Jenkins had both a 70 yard and 50 yard touchdown run and averaged almost 19 yards per carry adding to his already crazy total for three games. The receivers also tallied three touchdown one to Johnson, Purify and Williams adding to their total, Johnson led the pack with 83 yards most of them coming on the long touchdown reception. Overall the Warriors produced 425 yards of offense with their only blemish being a turnover.
Defensively the Warriors shutout their second opponent in a row with their last points allowed coming in week one against the Vikings. The defensive highlight of the game was the 60 yard scoop and score but the defense was lights out the whole game holding the Wildcat offense to only 99 yards of offense and only 1.9 yards per play. They also forced three turnovers with two fumbles and an interception. They also held the Wildcats to 1-6 on forth downs giving their offense great field position most of the time
Overall it was a big win for the Westside Warriors on their homecoming night. Along with the penalties being handed down to Millard South, Westside should be able to leap frog the Patriots to become the number one team in the state for now. Westside’s next challenge comes next Friday coming on the road against a top ten Bellevue West team who is coming off a big win against their crosstown rival. It will be a challenge for the Warriors as they try to keep their undefeated season going. “We need to have a good practice,” Williams said “ That’s all just need to have a solid week of practice.”
