Top-ranked Westside took a drive out to Kearney and mauled the Bearcats 56-0. The Warriors continue their undefeated season, advancing to a record of 7-0. This win was impressive from the start, with all eight touchdowns in the first half. Head coach Paul Limongi was pleased with the victory.

“I think we played really well tonight,” Limongi said. “We had a great week of practice, the kids were really focused and locked in and they came out and we hit it on all cylinders, which is great but we still got a lot left in the tank.”

The Warriors were led on defense by linebacker Jonny Hurtado, who had eight tackles and two sacks. Defensive end R.J Eckhardt had seven tackles to go along with three sacks. Defensive tackle Jonquel Osler also had two sacks and a fumble recovery for the Warrior defense. Defensive back Teddy Rezac jumped into the stat sheet with an interception as well.

“It’s just everyone doing their job,” Limongi said. “We have 11 guys and everybody has to do their thing, everybody believes in the system and what we’re doing. If everybody does their job and we distribute the ball like we need to, we hope good things will happen and it did tonight.”

The offense was led by quarterback Anthony Rezac, who completed 13 of 14 passes for 227 yards and three touchdowns. The senior also added 72 yards and a touchdown rushing. Jahmez Ross continued his amazing year with 15 carries totaling 207 yards and three touchdowns.

“We just came up with the game plan, running downhill, breaking tackles and making sure they can feel us all day,” Ross said. “Just like I said last week, we don’t care who we play, we come out hard against everyone.”

The tight ends played a major role in Westside’s offensive attack. Christian Jones had two receptions for 95 yards and two touchdowns. Trevor Spady caught two as well, for 22 yards and a touchdown. Caleb Benning led the team in receptions with three, to go along with his 54 yards.

Wetside started off on a high note with a 62-yard touchdown rush by Rezac, followed by a 3-yard punch in by Ross. Later in the first quarter Rezac connected with Jones on a 64-yard touchdown pass. Spady then caught a 10-yard touchdown pass to put the Warriors up 28-0 after the first quarter. Ross started the second quarter off with a five-yard touchdown run. Osler recovered a fumble on the Kearney 11-yard line which set up a Beau Ryan 4-yard touchdown run. Midway through the quarter Ross broke free on the first play of a drive for a 60-yard touchdown, for his third score of the game. The final touchdown of the game came in the second quarter with  a 31-yard reception by Jones.

Westside will take on No. 2 Millard South on Friday. The game is expected to be the game of the year in Class A. The matchup between the two top ranked teams has been long awaited by much of the state. Coach Limongi has the same mindset he’s had all season with this game.

“It’s gonna be a big game cause it’s out, it has nothing to do with them and everything to do with us,” Limongi said. “It’s the biggest game on our schedule because it’s our next.”
