The history of the Westside Vs. Creighton Prep rivalry

The+history+of+the+Westside+Vs.+Creighton+Prep+rivalry

One of the most storied rivalries in the history of Nebraska high school sports is between Westside and Creighton Prep.

The series started in 1958 and has been called the neighborhood rivalry. Students from Creighton Prep are in the same neighborhood as students from Westside. The Warriors have dominated the series against the Junior Jays in recent years. Westside has won the past 6 games. For The Warriors they last fell  to the Jr.Jays in 2017 when the final score was 45-41 at Phelps Field.

Throughout the rivalry there  has been some vandalism during the rivalry in recent years. In 2013 the “Courage” rock was spray painted blue and “Prep” was spray painted in white on the track. Westside comes into the game ranked number one in the state, while Creighton Prep lost their season opener to Bellevue West, 27-14.

Westside quarterback, Anthony Rezac talks about how he grew up with the rivalry

“The rivalry is something I’ve grown up in and always been around, so it’s a big part of my Westside career,” Rezac said. “Competing with the guys from over there is always super fun and a highlight.”

Westside DL, Jonquel Osler also explained how he and the rest of his teammates are happy to keep the Prep week tradition alive.

“It means everything, it’s been a long time rivalry and we’re just happy to keep the tradition going.”

The kickoff for the Westside versus Prep game will be Friday, Aug. 25 at 7:00 p.m. at Phelps Field.
