It has been a long time since animation was just for kids, and we live in a world where it seems any movie that made money is bound to have a sequel. It is no wonder then, that “Zootopia 2”, Disney Animation Studios most recent major release, eventually arrived on the scene. But this one is good, and it shows. The film has become the highest-grossing animated movie of all time with 1.85 billion dollars in global ticket sales.
Unique and adventurous, valuable lessons is what the new movie “Zootopia 2” is all about. This is an animated movie that is fun but also teaches important values – working with others, determination, equality, the importance of history and how to live your life where anyone can be anything. Determined bunny cop Judy Hopps, and clever fox Nick Wilde, again work together to crack a case. As partners on the police force in this film their differences are highlighted, arguing begins, disagreements take control, and sometimes their playful chemistry can lead them into serious trouble with their boss, including almost losing their job. Throughout the film, however, it’s clear they are the best working as partners because they use their differences in a way that helps them learn from each other. One of the lessons they, and audiences, learn as the film progresses is that it is okay to agree to disagree.
The movie begins with a mystery bringing misery as everyone is wondering if reptiles have made their appearance in Zootopia again. Trails of snake skin worry other species of animals as reptiles were banned and forgotten many years ago. Nick and Judy go on an adventure to understand the reptiles, why they have come back, and eventually to bring them back into the Zootopia society. During this case the danger grows wildly because they are working under threats from the true villains of the story and being chased down by the ZPD (zootopia police department) at the same time. Though with Nick’s quick thinking and Judy’s bravery they aren’t letting up just yet. They run into traces of evidence, navigate through new places, meet unfamiliar faces, and carry the weight on making tough decisions.
The movie builds to its climax as Judy learns that Reptile City was buried and purposefully forgotten hundreds of years ago. Many reptiles got split up from their families at that time and the snake was blamed as an evil species by other animals in Zootopia years ago. Reptile City holds the key to the truth and to bringing snakes back into the larger society. The fun and exciting conclusion of the movie happens here after Judy and Nick are able to find strength in their differences. Together they learn that doing good work means not just locking up the bad guy, but lifting up everyone else.
“Zootopia 2” runs through big and beautifully designed rainforests, speeds through hectic city traffic, and is beautifully designed from start to finish. It also includes an upbeat soundtrack that is catchy and goes along nicely with the action of the film. It is reminiscent of the music that defined the first “Zootopia” film.
Not only is this movie great for kids but also for anyone who enjoys a good, fast-paced story. But people should also watch because it teaches – about stereotypes, the importance of the past, profiling and acceptance. Nick and Judy come from two different backgrounds but that’s what makes their partnership unique. They balance each other out like night and day, and in the mix of it they work together like a beautiful sunset. The message in this film is that no matter their size, species, or background, all animals should feel seen, understood and given the same chance at life. The same should be said for people – making the world a better place one brave choice at a time whether you’re a tiny bunny or a clever fox.
