At the end of this semester, Warrior Theater put on a production of Angel Phipp’s adaptation of Peter Pan. I was super excited and intrigued to see the new version.
The play started off amazing and I was impressed. All of the actors were very enthusiastic and it kept me entertained. The set of the apartment was cute. Additionally, the sets of the ship and Neverland were quite fun.
However, things started to drag a little as the characters moved into Neverland. Some scenes were just stretched out for too long. For example, there were some parts where the cast would play games with little to no dialogue for many minutes. I got pretty bored during these parts, but things would pick back up quickly afterwards.
Another thing that felt awkward were the flying scenes. Instead of moving around or moving the set, when the actors “flew”, they just stood in one spot. Sometimes they would run around with flags that represented the, “flying”. I was really confused. It looked really funny when they were just standing in one spot with a dormant set pretending to fly.
The first act was great and I was surprised with how funny and clever the script was. There were some lines that really made me laugh. Then, the second act came.
During the second act, I became completely lost. New characters were introduced with little background knowledge, vials of poison kept being talked about with no other information, and I just felt confused. At this point, it felt extremely dragged on. However, the acting and clever jokes made up for it.
The show ended, and I told the actors good job. They were all humble and kind.
All in all, Peter Pan was super fun and wholesome, but there were some plot holes and confusion. I would give this production a 5/10.
