Last season, the girls tennis team secured their first metro win in 18 years. For this season, second year Coach Betsy Kingston expects a team full of unity and mutual support, building upon the team culture she quickly established in her first season.
“Whether on or off the court, each player brings dedication and a positive attitude, creating a culture of sportsmanship and resilience,” Kingston said. “It is inspiring to see how everyone pushes each other to improve while celebrating individual and collective achievements.”
A few weeks before metros, the team made some major lineup changes. According to Kingston, it taught them the importance of adaptability and communication.
“Our goal is to build on last year’s success, play every point with intention, and support each other so we can reach new heights together,” Kingston said.
Seniors Gretchen Goebel, who is playing number one singles, and Carly Connell are major influential standouts to the team.
“Gretchen’s technical prowess and calm under pressure motivates teammates, while Carly’s enthusiasm and hard working attitude lifts everyone’s spirits during tough matches,” Kingston said. “Their commitment not only improves our performance, but also encourages newer players to step up and find their own strengths”
After an exciting season with a new coach, the team is comfortable, and now perfecting the little things.
“We aim to compete fiercely in every dual and play every point with intention,” Kingston said. “Beyond winning matches, developing confidence, consistency, and adaptability are central to our objectives this year.”
Kingston is not only striving for wins, but more importantly to shape the players into the best athlete they can be.
“A successful season isn’t just about wins and losses- it’s about progress,” Kingston said. “If our players walk away with improved skills, stronger relationships, and lasting memories, we’ve achieved our mission.”
Behind all the wins and losses, is a team representing their school with pride and passion for tennis.
“We want our fans and fellow students to feel inspired by our passion and perseverance. The lessons learned from tennis- hard work, respect, and resilience- extend far beyond the court,” Kingston said. “We hope everyone sees the value of teamwork and the importance of celebrating both victories and setbacks as opportunities for growth.”
