The Warriors travelled across the river to Council Bluffs for a dual against Lewis Central. Lewis Central, ranked No. 5 in Iowa, won the dual on criteria over Omaha Westside, ranked No. 2 in Nebraska, after a 42-42 tie.
The girls wrestlers faced some very tough competition against the Titans but they finished strong. The atmosphere of the dual was great and definitely helped the Warriors keep their energy up throughout the entire round. The loss can be disappointing but this momentum shows a strong start to the season. Head coach Bob Mulligan explains his feelings towards the dual.
“I feel we went out and battled, they are an extremely talented team and to compete the way we did made me really happy,” Mulligan said.
One athlete that had a very memorable performance is freshman Jayden Jones. Jones competed in the 125 weight class and defeated her opponent 11-3. Jones shared her feelings about the match.
“I feel I had a good performance wrestling at the Lewis central dual,” Jones said.
Jones is a very good example to show what the new additions to this team have brought to the picture. Sometimes keeping team culture up can be hard because new wrestlers are not familiar with the team yet but these new Warriors have shown that to be wrong. They have kept the tempo up and mixed in with the veterans without any problems. Coach Mulligan talked about how Jones has impacted the team this year.
“Jayden came in as a very highly rated incoming freshman and she’s had an impressive season. She’s taken her lumps as expected with our incredibly tough schedule but she’s also had some impressive wins,” Mulligan said. “I’m so excited to see her continue to flourish not just this year but for her whole high school career.”
Team culture is one of the biggest focusses for the Warriors and they have shown that this year. It is easy to see that they have created a sisterhood that no one can break. Having this bond makes for a very strong team. Jones talked about her strengths as a wrestler.
“I’d say my strengths are definitely team, having a supportive, trustworthy, good hearted team that will always have your back,” Jones said.
The Warriors have had a great season so far and they keep improving every week. Their biggest goal this season is to win a state title and their chances are looking quite promising. Coach Mulligan talked about continuing goals for the rest of the season.
“We just need to keep grinding and working on the small things, to help them get to where they want to be,” Mulligan said. “It’s simple keep doing what we’ve been doing and good things will happen.”
