The Westside Unified Bowling team started their season strong with a fun and energetic match this week. The event was less about competition and more about bringing teammates and athletes together to enjoy the sport.
Senior Karsen Forbes said the match went well and that unified bowling is a great way to get ready for the upcoming varsity season.
“The match went well, it’s unified so it’s more of something to do just for fun,” Forbes said. “Unified bowling is only a month and it doesn’t matter as much, it’s pretty much a preseason to prepare me for the varsity season starting in December. I’m looking forward to having the new coaches and new teammates, and have us improve from our semifinal finish from last year.”
Forbes also talked about how important team energy is to him.
“I felt personally that I brought a lot of energy for my team. Feeling energy and supporting the athletes is what makes Unified Bowling one of the highlights of my entire high school career. Knowing that I personally bring so much joy to the athletes is what keeps me going in wanting to help more.”
Senior Manuela Kate said the match was a big success and gave credit to the new coach, Ms. Butterfield.
“The match went AMAZING!! Seeing all the stunning athletes and genuine peers is what makes Unified Bowling so special,” Kate said. “Our new coach Ms. Butterfield is so adaptable and considerate with learning so much this year. With all the support from parents and fans of our program really gives the athletes and peers motivation to always perform their best.”
Kate also shared what she enjoys most about being part of the unified team.
“I am most excited about seeing our athletes interact with their ‘competition,” Kate said. “I love to see the drive and support that our athletes show to others outside our unified bubble. I’m also really excited for districts and state since it’s my senior year and I want to finish on a high note.”
Kate enjoys spending time with the team and helping out her peers.
“I enjoy getting to know the athletes on a recreational level,” Kate said. “Something other than seeing them in the hallways and in class. Giving the athletes a new sense of independence brings me joy as a partner for Unified Bowling. I also admire seeing their special celebrations when they bowl; it brings a smile to my face and fills my cup with so much positivity.”
While the match was mostly for fun, the team showed a lot of spirit and teamwork. With new coaches, new teammates, and a strong senior class, Westside Unified Bowling is off to a great start and ready to build momentum for the varsity season ahead.
