The girls wrestling team has been on a dominant run lately and it showed at their latest outing in Coppell, Texas at the Mrs. Claus slam. The team finished at fourth without two of their big key wrestlers, Regan Rosseter and Piper Zatechka.

However one other stood out, Freshman Mara Vanderpool has stepped up in a big way getting first place at the Council Bluffs Classic and most recently at the Mrs. Claus Slam. Vanderpool is currently riding a 16 match win streak and shared her thoughts about it and what it will take to further extend the win streak.

“It feels good because like, that’s what I wanted to do,” Vanderpool said. “ I just wanted to come out and compete my first year of high school.”

Head girls coach, Bob Mulligan spoke about what it’s like having a young talent like Vanderpool on the team.

“Having Mara has been amazing,” Mulligan said. “She has known the team for a long time so she meshed right in and it has been awesome. I know she will continue to dominate and will be right in the hunt for a state title at the end of the year.”

Vanderpool also spoke about what it’s like coming into high school as a freshman and being introduced to the number one ranked team in Nebraska and being able to  deal with the pressure to uphold that ranking by being on such a dominant run.

“I mean, it doesn’t definitely feel like a lot of pressure. Because I’ve been wrestling for so long, and I’ve competed at a high level and it’s just like every other tournament I go to,” Vanderpool said. “But it’s definitely a new environment and that’s different. It’s really nice to have a good team where everyone cares about you and they all have a good friendship.”

Coach Mulligan also addressed the teams massive success and spoke about what’s necessary in order to continue the teams dominance.

“Our team just needs to keep doing what we do,” Mulligan said. “Work hard, stay positive and be great teammates and we will continue to be successful.”

The girls team will all be back in action tonight as they dual against Council Bluffs here at Westside and look to continue their dominance as a team.
