Freshman face many challenges being new to high school, but one thing not many get the opportunity to do is adjust to being on a varsity athletic team.
This spring season, many freshman made varsity sports.
The varsity girls soccer team has many new memebers, including three freshman, Abigal Lippincott, Elise Arant and Monica Siegel.
“Being a freshman on varsity can be very challenging at times, but it’s also a lot of fun. I like getting to know the upperclassmen and being able to look up to them, ” said Arant
Although being on varsity has been a big accomplishment for all three of these freshman athletes, they’ve had some adapting to do.
“There wasn’t too much of an adjustment, but it’s definitely different to go from playing with girls your size and age, to playing with girls that are 3-4 inches taller than you, and 3-4 years older,” said Lippincott
Much like the soccer team, the varsity tennis team inducted two freshman this year; Lizzie Harwood and Phoebe Plazcek. After the team won state last year, these two have a lot to live up to this upcoming season.
“Its kind of scary because I feel like I have a higher expectation being one of the youngest on the team, but at the same time It’s really fun being on the team with all of the older kids,” Placzek said.
The girls soccer team has played two games and all three freshman have been playing and contributing to the team. Plazcek and Harwood are expected to do well, Lizzie is on the number one doubles team at Westside with her sister Mckinney. These young athletes have accomplished a lot and are expected to do well the rest of the season.
