Over the next two weeks, students will be trying out for the cheer and dance teams.
For both cheer and dance, students who wish to try out attend practice in the morning at 6:30 and after school until 4:30. Outside of their performance during their tryout, part of the score will come from teacher recommendation sheets.
March 18 was the beginning of the varsity dance team tryout week. Girls will learn two different dances that they will have to perform during their tryout. Along with this, they will also learn and perfect different skills needed to be on dance team.
This year a few changes have been made to the tryout. During the Jazz/Hip Hop routine, the girls will have to incorporate their own choreography into part of the dance. They also added new skills that the girls will have to know, as well as made skills that used to be optional, mandatory. Along with this, the girls have the chance to earn extra points on their tryout score by doing additional skills that have been added this year.
Tryouts will be held saturday morning at the high school. The list will be posted Saturday afternoon before 3 pm on the Dance Wiki.
Starting on March 25, all students who wish to be a part of one of the three cheerleading squads will begin practice. Over 100 students will try out for the 40 spots available.
This year there are many changes to the tryout. The participants will learn a long cheer and dance, which have been choreographed by the senior varsity cheerleaders. Along with this, they will be given the words to a short chant, and are required to make up their own motions.
Another major change this year is that each person trying out for a cheer squad will be interviewed by a cheerleading coach.
“We decided to do this because it’s a good skill for them to have for future job interviews, and it gives them some practice. It also gives us an idea of their personality, and who they are as a person. It lets us see what they think cheerleading is, and what the commitment will be,” said cheer coach Amy Studts.
Tryouts for cheer will be held on Saturday, March 30. The final list will be posted Saturday afternoon once everyone who made it has been notified.
