As students journey through their high school career, a question that is often brought up is, “How does this affect me?”. In response, many teachers strive to connect what the students are learning to a real world situation. Digitools instructor Jeanette Kleppinger implemented an activity that tries to connect the gap of the reality to the student. Digitool students visited Westgate Elementary School last Friday to meet with the Kindergarteners.
“They are each working with a kindergartener to write a story about the kindergartener and then the kindergartener will illustrate the book about [themselves],” said Kleppinger.
This activity allowed the students to give each kindergartener one on one attention. From there, Digitool students will then take the kindergartener’s pictures and put it into an iMovie story.
“I thought it was nice to hang out with the kindergarteners, it helped me work with younger kids,” said Digitools student, Summer Holub.
Along with helping students, Kleppinger thinks that it is helpful to the high school students too.
“They are giving back to the community with the skills they have learned. They are using the skills that they have learned and applying it to a greater cause” said Kleppinger.
Westgate student Mikah Miller thought the activity was fun and enjoyed talking about her family.
“It was fun,” said Miller.
