Students and staff received an email this week outlining Westside’s out of school food policy. “It’s really just a reminder.” assistant principal Trudi Nolin said. “This policy isn’t anything new, it’s been in place for several years now.” The school’s policy only refers to fast food. Bagged lunches and other grocery items are not included in the policy.
Nolin said that staff are expected to enforce the policy. Any students with fast food inside the building will be asked to throw it away or eat it outside. Nolin says the school provides enough food options inside the building to have this policy. Upperclassman are also given the opportunity to leave the building and may eat wherever they wish, provided the food is not brought back into the building.
The school’s administration has seen an increase in students carrying in outside food in addition to food being delivered. This sudden jump in outside food prompted this policy reminder. “Because it’s on an increase, we just wanted to remind students of the policy so they wouldn’t be surprised when it’s enforced.” Nolin said.
