Westside delivered an impressive performance at the Millard West Varsity Wrestling Meet, placing seven of its ten wrestlers and proving the team’s depth against strong competition. Throughout the day, the Warriors showed composure and grit, consistently battling through tough brackets and earning valuable placements. The meet served as another indicator that Westside is progressing at the right time of the season, with both experienced seniors and emerging juniors stepping up in key moments.
One of the standout performances came from senior Gable Jernigan at 150 pounds, where he finished second after a strong run through his bracket. Jernigan wrestled with confidence and control, using his experience to manage close matches and stay poised under pressure. His path to the finals featured smart decision-making and a steady pace that allowed him to dictate positions against quality opponents. Although he came up just short of the top spot, his runner-up finish added momentum to the team and reflected the consistency he has shown throughout the season.
Junior Jaden Von Knorring also earned a second-place finish, placing runner-up in the 157-pound weight class. Von Knorring’s tournament was marked by physical matches and a willingness to push the action from start to finish. He advanced through the bracket with aggressive hand fighting and strong positioning, showing improvement in both confidence and composure as the day went on. His performance demonstrated how much he has grown as a competitor, particularly in high-pressure situations.
After the meet, Von Knorring reflected on his performance and the team’s overall effort, highlighting mindset and preparation.
“Coming into this meet, I really wanted to focus on wrestling smart and staying disciplined,” Von Knorring said. “Millard West is always a tough environment, and you know you’re not going to get any easy matches. Every opponent is strong, every position matters, and you have to stay mentally sharp the entire time. Getting second feels good, but it also shows me that there’s still another level I can reach. Tournaments like these show what you need to work on, and that’s something I actually appreciate because it helps me get better. What made today even more meaningful was how our whole team competed. Seeing guys fight through tough matches, even in losses, pushes you to give everything you have. When everyone is invested like that, it makes the team stronger as a whole.”
Senior Chase Myers contributed to Westside’s success with a fifth-place finish at 165 pounds. Myers faced a challenging bracket and responded well after setbacks, battling back to secure a spot on the podium. His performance reflected resilience and determination, qualities that have defined his leadership role this season. Myers’ ability to bounce back and continue competing at a high level provided a steady presence for the Warriors and helped maintain their momentum throughout the meet.
Junior Graham Hoffart turned in a strong showing at 215 pounds, finishing third in a very competitive weight class. Hoffart wrestled with intensity and control, using his strength and conditioning to wear down opponents over the course of the tournament. As the rounds progressed, his confidence grew, and he remained composed in key moments to secure his placement. His performance was a testament to both his preparation and his ability to execute under pressure.
Hoffart spoke after the meet about the importance of focus and trusting his training.
“At this point in the season, it’s all about believing in the work you’ve put in and staying locked in mentally,” Hoffart said. “At 215, every match is a grind, and you can’t take a single position for granted. I’ve really been emphasizing conditioning and controlling ties in practice, and I felt like that paid off today. Even in tough matches, I felt strong and confident in my abilities. Getting third is something I’m proud of, but more than that, I’m proud of how I wrestled. I stayed aggressive, I didn’t panic, and I trusted my technique. Watching our teammates compete and place throughout the day creates this energy where everyone wants to push harder, not just for themselves, but for the team.”
Overall, Westside’s placers at the Millard West Varsity Meet highlighted the team’s balance and competitiveness across the lineup. The combination of veteran leadership and rising talent continues to fuel the Warriors’ success as the season moves forward. With performances like these, Westside showed that it is capable of competing at a high level while continuing to build confidence heading into future meets.
