FBLA Sponsors Homecoming Door Decorating Contest

Westside’s Future Business Leaders of America club, also known as FBLA, has carried on a tradition at Westside for more than 20 years; a homeroom door decorating contest during homecoming week. This contest is sponsored by FBLA and all homerooms are invited to participate in the contest. According to FBLA club sponsor Lisa Admire, the decorating contest will start on Monday, Sept. 23, and homerooms have until Friday, Sept. 27, to decorate. Homerooms can use any supplies that students bring, or they can use materials from the media center to decorate.

“Homerooms [can] decorate their doors any way they want the week of homecoming,” Admire said. “[FBLA] votes on one and [the homeroom that wins] usually [gets] donuts for whatever day they want.”

Admire said she hopes that the competition will create relationships within the school.

“Mostly, FBLA [sponsors the competition] to get people excited about building community within the school and getting them excited about something that everyone can participate in,” Admire said. “It’s a fun way to show school spirit and to show some of your artistic skills and get homerooms together doing one project.”

Junior Dayzee Mayfield, co-president of FBLA, explained the basic idea of the club.

“[FBLA] basically takes the idea of leadership and business so people can not only get involved with business, but [also] leadership,” Mayfield said.

Admire said she thinks the door decorating contest will help people learn more about FBLA and the work they are doing. She also said she hopes that it will be a way for students to take an interest in joining the FBLA community.

“It’s a way to get exposure out there so people know a little more about FBLA and possibly promote new memberships,” Admire said.
