Westside High School’s Amazing Technicolor Show Choir is preparing for a competitive season, with members emphasizing that success begins long before they take the stage.
Early morning rehearsals and extended practices have defined the group’s preparation, leading up to performances where students showcase months of work.
“I was really excited seeing how all of our work throughout the year could be shown to our audience,” member Gavin Schenkelberg said. “It’s pretty fun, but it’s also a lot of hard work to get to where we need to be.”
Schenkelberg said the group has set clear goals for the 2026 season.
“The goal is to win,” he said. “We want to win every competition. We lost the first one, but we’re hoping to win the rest.”
Show choir combines singing, dancing and performance, making it a unique activity that can be unfamiliar to some audiences.
“I’d encourage people to come to one show and see what it’s like,” Schenkelberg said. “It’s really different, and you’d be impressed by the singing and dancing.”
Team chemistry also plays a major role in the group’s performance, Schenkelberg said.
“We have a lot of team bonding at the beginning of the year, and that helps us feel comfortable with each other,” he said. “There’s a lot of tradition, like going to someone’s house or out to eat after competitions.”
The season will conclude with an end-of-year trip to Orlando, offering students a chance to celebrate their work together.
“It’s going to be pretty fun,” Schenkelberg said. “We get to choose who we room with and spend time together.”
As the season continues, members of Amazing Technicolor Show Choir said they are focused on improving performances and building on their early experiences.
