17 Westside students were awarded Access College Early Scholarships this school year.

17 Westside students were awarded the Access College Early Scholarship last semester. This scholarship helps pay for up to three dual enrollment classes per year.

Academic Counselor Dr. Vicki Londer is one of the instructors involved in helping students apply for Access College Early Scholarships. She said that her role is to help make students aware that the scholarship may be an option for them.

I am just advertising [the scholarship] to let students know that it’s available,” Londer said. “Then, I help students create their account, [and] answer questions if they have any.”

Londer said that the Access College Early Scholarship is only an option for students who need financial assistance.

“[The students] do have to have documentation that shows there’s a financial need,” Londer said.

Londer said that the scholarship will go towards dual enrollment classes taken at UNO, Wesleyan, or Metro Community College. Students need to apply during whichever semester they are taking a class that offers college credit.

“They want every student to have the opportunity to be able to take a dual enrollment class for college credit,” Londer said.

Administrative Assistant Andrea Paulson is another instructor involved in the scholarship application process. Paulson said she reviews the applications to ensure students are eligible.

“I receive their applications and I review them to make sure all their information is correct, and that they have attached the correct documentation to show that they’re qualified to apply for [the scholarship],” Paulson said.

Paulson said this process has been successful by awarding scholarships to many students.

“This last fall, we did get quite a few [scholarships awarded],” Paulson said. “I think most of our students who applied did receive scholarships.”

Londer said that students still have time to apply for the Access College Early Scholarship for their second semester classes.

“Students can still apply, they have until March 15,” Londer said. “It’s a great way for a student to get at least one class paid for.”
