The Warriors varsity basketball team split their pair of games in an opening week four team tournament. They started their season with a dominant win over Columbus winning 89-30, but then followed up with a 13-point loss to Millard North, 80-67. Head coach Jim Simons said what the difference was between the two games.

“We played extremely hard in both games and with a great team spirit,” Simons said. “I was really happy with our effort.  We were simply much too undisciplined on Saturday to beat a very good Millard North team that played well against us.”

Simons said the defensive miscues were another reason the Warriors struggled to keep it close and come out with a win over the Mustangs.

“Our attention to detail on the defensive end wasn’t up to the standards that we need to meet in order to be successful and it showed with our inability to get consistent stops defensively,” he said.

Sophomore guard CJ Mitchell said that the fastbreak and high paced Millard North offense gave them the edge on offense.

“I think in transition you know they just pushed the pace and got down and got buckets. We were struggling to keep the guy in front of us last night but we are trying to work on that at practice,” Mitchell said.

It’s just the beginning of the season so the Warriors still have a lot to work on. The Warriors are trying to improve their team and coaching.

“We need to become a more disciplined team,” Simons said. “Our guys give great effort every night out, but we have to learn to be more consistent in carrying out our responsibilities. As coaches we need to do a better job of clearly communicating those responsibilities and holding guys accountable in practice so we see better carryover from practice to games.”

The Warriors will take on the ninth-ranked Omaha North Vikings on Thursday, Dec. 9 followed by the Norfolk Panthers at home on Saturday, Dec. 11.
