The boys JV and Varsity teams traveled to Creighton Prep this past Tuesday to compete against the rival Bluejays.

JV started the night off and was competing very well at halftime. The score was 25-24 at half with the Warriors behind just a point. The JV team was helped out by sophomore Cal Weidemann who swings and plays with both teams. Weidemann takes his basketball talents off of his older sister, Quinn, and helps the Warriors on both sides of the court. The game went down to the fourth quarter, where Prep pulled ahead for the 8-point win, 50-42.

The Varsity basketball game followed, and both teams came out hot. Prep took an early lead, but the Warriors held on for most of the first half. Thompson had a couple of great buckets down low, using his strength to get inside. Prep put its arguably best on-ball defender on Booth, and was relatively successful in the first half of the game. At the end of the half Prep began to pull away. The score was 40-28 at halftime.

Out of halftime, the Warriors cut Prep’s lead down to 8, thanks to much better defense and moving the ball around on offense. Booth began to hit a couple of shots, and ended the game with 18 points. However, it was not enough. Westside stuck around till the end, never letting Prep gain a bigger lead, and even got as close as five points. However, the third ranked Prep team was too much for Westside as they made free throws in the waning minutes to seal up the game, 67-60.

Although Westside didn’t get the outcome that they wanted, they hung in there until the very end, and against as strong a team as Prep, that is no easy feat.
