RECAP: Boys varsity soccer wraps up a memorable season

The varsity boys soccer team ended a long season last Saturday, with a loss in the state semi-final to Omaha South. The team went 18-3 on the season, with only three losses to Millard North, Lincoln Southwest and Omaha South.

Junior Jack Finocchiaro lead the team’s attack with 25 goals, only one away from the record for most goals scored in a season.

“Lots of high expectations for next year. [We are] Expecting nothing less than this year. Hopefully [we] continue to have an even better year and get a state trophy,” Finocchiaro said. “And for me individually, I think I had a better year than expected.”

Some highlights of their season is winning the Metro Tournament and Districts and making it to the semi-finals of the State Tournament. Sophomore Christian Madsen says that “The team chemistry really created a family atmosphere.”

“Our seniors this year left us in a great position to excel again next year. They showed great leadership throughout the season and taught us a lot,” Madsen said. “We are a young team and we should only get better next year.”

Head coach and social studies instructor John Brian reflects on the season.

“High points were winning the Academic Achievement Award, Metros and having one of the most exciting teams in the state to watch,” Brian said. “[We plan to] become an even better, well rounded team and go back to state to finish business.”
