Mockingjay Part 2 flies high

The Hunger Game: Mockingjay Part 2 is the final piece in the multibillion-dollar film adaption of Suzanne Collin’s novel series. The books are an epic trilogy reimagined in four action packed movies that has put actors such as Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth into international popularity.

The latest film takes place directly after Part 1. The war against the tyrannical Capitol is favoring the rebels of the 13 Districts, save a loyalist faction to the government. Main characters die like HBO’s Game of Thrones. Speaking of Game of Thrones, Natalie Dormer returns and there is also a minor character played by Game of Thrones’ Brienne of Tarth, the English actress Gwendoline Christie.

I don’t want to spoil it for anyone, but if you have not read the books, which I have, the ending will be very shocking, though it did also have a Lord of the Rings-ending-syndrome where the last ten minutes were just throwing out scenes that could easily work as a decent conclusion to the film.

The actors and their performances were very convincing. The chemistry between Katniss, the protagonist, and President Snow, the main antagonist and president of the fictional country Panem, was believable for every second. The same could be also said for Katniss and her sister, Prim.

Unfortunately, since the 21st century enjoys injecting love triangles into young adult novels, the producers had to show it in the adaption. It is an annoying trend to say the least, but at least the film doesn’t hammer it into your head every five minutes like the Twilight series has.

The death scenes are very emotional and the reactions of the actors match what I had seen by reading the books. Personally, I thought the third book was a bit slow at times, much like a bit of Part 1. It would have been better if it was just one “Mockingjay” and not two movies that have many scenes capable of being cut out.

It seems a little melancholy that this series is over, which is how I felt when Harry Potter ended. The thrill is gone now that the conclusion has ended, but it was a fun ride while it lasted. Overall, Mockingjay Part 2 is not flawless, but it is still a great film and a must see to those who are fans of the novels.
