The last week was fully loaded with activities, especially sports, in the Westside community.

To begin the four-day Labor Day weekend, the girls cross country team competed in Seward in their first meet of the season. Leading the team was senior Phoebe Placzek who placed twelfth in the meet. The team placed fifth overall.

That night, the football team took on rival Creighton Prep. The team got off to a great start when Logan Duryee took a 20-plus yard run to the end-zone. The scoring brigade then took off as the Warriors won the game 41-0. The team will play again Friday at Millard South.

As in most busy high schools, when one event finished, others began. The girls softball team had several games over the weekend, yielding a 1-3 record. The team beat Omaha North 12-3, though they lost to Elkhorn South, Skutt, and Lincoln Southeast in the Westside invitational to end their competition week. Their latest game, Tuesday Sept. 8, was cancelled due to rain.

The volleyball team began their season over the long weekend as well. The group led by first year coach Jessica Fauss is currently 3-4. Wins over the break included Bellevue West, Millard South and Burke while losses came from Bishop Heelon, Papilion-La Vista, Millard North and a five-set loss to Lincoln Southeast, most recently.

Boys tennis competed plenty of times as well. The squad lost to Papillion-La Vista last Thursday, Sept. 3, with a score of 4-5, though they bounced back to beat Benson yesterday, Sept. 8 with a convincing score of 9-0.
