KB’s campaign comes to an end in the semifinals

After winning the Nebraska American Legion State Championship, the Central Plains Regional Championship and breezing through pool play in the American Legion World Series, KB suffered a 4-3 loss to Midland, Mich.

In the game, KB started Class of 2014’s Jake Meyers on the mound. Meyers was able to keep Midland scoreless for 4 2/3 innings while KB built a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the first, Class of 2014’s Drew Fitzmorris scored when senior Mike Waldron hit an RBI double, putting KB up 1-0.

Then, in the bottom of the third, Meyers gave himself some run support, blasting a solo home run to left field, putting KB up 2-0. The home run was the third of the entire American Legion World Series.

But in the fifth inning Midland cut into the KB lead. After putting runners on the corners, a KB throwing error let the runner on third score, making it a 2-1 ballgame. Meyers proceeded to strike out a Midland batter to end the inning.

After a few innings of scoreless baseball, Meyers found himself in a jam in the top of the seventh. With runners on the corners and no outs, KB head coach Bob Greco elected to put senior Matt Waldron on the mound. Waldron limited the damage to two runs, putting Midland on top of KB 3-2, while striking out three batters to end the inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, KB loaded the bases with two outs before senior Mike Waldron popped up to first base to end the inning.

Midland was able to add an insurance run in the top of the ninth, making it 4-2. With a trip to the World Series Championship Game on the line, KB was able to put men on the corners with two outs, as Class of 2014’s Drew Fitzmorris was able to foul off everything in the strike zone before being walked on an at bat that lasted over ten pitches. Then, senior Alex Nielsen hit a single to score the runner on third before Mi. Waldron was hit by a pitch to load the bases, putting Ma. Waldron up to bat. Ma. Waldron fought off a number of pitches and took three balls to get to a full count, but ultimately popped out to end the inning.

KB’s campaign was truly incredible. As the ESPN3.com commentators pointed out multiple times throughout the series, KB was the only team in the World Series made up of players from only one school. Most teams are a group of All-Stars from various high schools.

In giving the team the support and congratulations it deserved, Westsiders took to Twitter to tweet messages of praise in flurries. Even many students from Creighton Prep were sending positive comments towards the KB players.

The Westside Wired staff would like to congratulate all of the coaches and players of the KB team for their outstanding showing in the state, regional and world series tournaments. It was truly an amazing season to watch.
