Now through twelve games on the season and holding a 8-4 record, the boys’ varsity soccer team is ranked number two in the state. The team had several games over the last two weeks including 3 in the metro tournament.

On Thursday April 10 the squad faced Papillion-La Vista where they won 3-2 in a shootout. This win put them in a semifinal rematch with Millard West on Saturday April 12. The game ended in a 2-1 Westside final. Goals in the match came from Chase McCann just two minutes into the game and Daniel Shonka who was able to put back a ball that had hit off the cross bar. This win launched the Warriors into the Metro championship against Omaha South on Tuesday April 15.

Unfortunately, the championship game didn’t well for the team. The game ended in a 1-0 Omaha South final as Westside finished as the Metro runner-up.

“I feel like we performed well in the metro tournament. We are not happy with the result of losing to Omaha South in the final, but we have learned from it to become a better team,” senior goalkeeper Quinn Nelson said.

When the tournament came to a close, the Warriors faced Lincoln Southwest in Lincoln on Friday April 18. The game ended with a controversial call when Quinn Nelson allegedly kicked a player from Southwest when saving a shot. The act resulted in a red card and a penalty kick that brought the game into overtime. Westside then lost in a shoot out, 4-3.

“I was shocked when the referee sent me off with a red card. I was making a routine play on the ball, and the Lincoln Southwest player came into contact with me. The referee claimed that I maliciously kicked him in the face, when my legs and feet were controlled in towards my body to protect myself,” Nelson said. “However, I give full credit to our team and their response in overtime. After we went down a goal in overtime, I was impressed that we came back to tie the game, while playing a man down. Credit goes to my teammates for continuing to play hard throughout the game, and never giving up hope that we would win.”

The final game Westside played was Monday April 21 at Papillion-La Vista south. Junior Danny Coyle started as goalkeeper because Nelson received a one game suspension after getting a red card in the previous game. The Titans bested Westside in this game and walked away with a 1-0 win, giving the Warriors their third straight loss.

The Warriors rebounded Thursday April 24 at Westside where the Warriors defeated Bellevue West 4-2 to break their three game losing streak.

With the season nearing an end goalkeeper Quinn Nelson still has high hopes for his team.

“The regular season is almost over. With 2 regular season games left before the Papio Tournament and Districts, I feel like we are in a decent spot. We need to make improvements to our game, and we need to come together as a team,” Nelson said.
