March 22 the boys varsity soccer team began its 2014 season as the number one team in the state. Its first game was at Skutt where the warriors won with a final score of 1-0. The team then took on Burke Tuesday, March 25 where a goal by Ariel Larios won it for the team, 1-0. It also traveled to Lincoln East where it would capture its third win of the season to move to 3-0. Head coach John Brian commented on what it is like to be the No. 1 team in the state.

“At the end of the day, being preseason number one or the first week of the season number one doesn’t mean anything,” head coach John Brian said. “You don’t get any trophies for that. It’s an honor to be recognized as a good team [and] being number one, but I think there [are] four teams who could legitimately have the title.”

The No. 1 team’s most recent game took place this past Monday at Creighton Prep. In a game with cold temperatures and gusting winds, the Warriors weren’t able to finish the job as the only score in the game was a goal by Creighton Prep’s Luke Manganaro.

“We create a lot of chances, we just need to put one or two of those chances in the back of the net,” Brian said.

The team has opportunities to bounce back Friday, April 4 at Bellevue East High School and Tuesday, April 8 at home against Millard West.

“Every game is important,” Brian said. “When we win a game we enjoy it for the day but the most important game is our next game. The most important game of our season is Friday at 7 p.m. at Bellevue East. That’s the most important game of our season. And then after that, we’ll refocus for our next game.”
