Boys Basketball Recap: Jan. 17 through Jan. 23
Over the past two weeks, the Westside basketball team went 5-0, and finds itself back in the top 10 of the Omaha World Herald rankings.
In its three match-ups this week, the Warriors beat Norfolk 60-48, then beat Millard West 72-46, then beat Millard North in double overtime 64-62.
The Norfolk win gave Norfolk its first loss of the season. The Warriors were able to win in the tough environment, in front of a full gym at Norfolk.
“We got off to a good start,” assistant coach Jim Simons said. “We shot the ball well early, which helped, and really played very well. It was fun. It was a good game for us.”
Simons said team’s game against Millard West, which came just 24 hours after the win at Norfolk, was a big win because the team was able to keep its energy and be ready despite having the Norfolk game the night before.
“Millard West was very gratifying because it showed our ability to bring a consistency of effort every night,” Simons said.
Against Millard North, the Warriors showed their grit. Despite being down with under two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Westside battled back to put the game into overtime, before winning in the second overtime. Despite an off night when it came to rebounding, as Simons said the team was out-rebounded by the Mustangs, the Warriors were able to grab the win.
This week, the Warriors will face North Platte. The game is at 4:45 p.m. at Westside. Simons said the team will have to keep its energy despite an early start time, as games normally start later in the evening, to take the win.
Westside Wired will be bringing you a LiveWired presentation of the game and the girls game before it. We will also be live tweeting both games. Follow us @westsidewired on Twitter to keep track of the game.
