Varsity Boys Basketball Falls On Northwest Free Throws

It was a tale of two quarters for Westside and Northwest. The Warriors, though, came up with the wrong quarter.

In the first quarter, led by seniors Kevin Metoyer and Michael Herrmann, the Warriors got out to an 18-point lead, before slowing down and ending the quarter up 12, 21-9. Herrmann was able to score at will, with nine points in the quarter.

In the next two quarters the teams were evenly matched, as the second quarter was played to an 18-18 draw, and the Warriors outscored Northwest by one point, 17-16, in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, with the Warriors leading by 11, 65-54 with under three minutes remaining, Northwest went on a 10-0 run, putting the score at 65-64 Westside with a minute remaining. With 30 seconds left, the Warriors turned the ball over as senior Mike Kiger fouled Northwest’s Finis Jones, sending him to the line. Jones hit both free throws, giving Northwest its first lead of the game, 66-65.

With 18 seconds remaining, Metoyer tried a three-point shot from the top of the key, almost identical to the one senior Mallory Thompson had taken to give the varsity girls basketball team a win just hours before. His shot fell no-good and Northwest got the rebound. Westside fouled Northwest with four and a half second remaining, sending Northwest to the line. The Huskies missed both free throws, and Kiger rebounded the ball and sprinted his way up the court before heaving a long three-pointer that fell no-good as time expired, giving the Warriors their second loss, 66-65.

The Warriors move to 2-2 on the season as Northwest improves to 3-0. Westside’s next game is against Millard South at Millard South, Friday, Dec. 20 at 7:15 p.m.
