Boys Basketball Tests No. 1 Benson
Playing at No. 1 Benson yesterday, the varsity boys basketball team came away with its first loss of the season. But not before giving the undefeated Bunnies one of the toughest tests of the season — a season in which Benson has played No. 2 Omaha Central and No. 3 Omaha South in addition to the No. 5 ranked Warriors.
The Bunnies took a 24-23 lead into halftime before the Warriors took a 10 point lead in the third quarter. But, Benson battled back to take a lead in the fourth quarter.
With Benson leading 51-47 with 30 seconds remaining, senior Mike Kiger hit a three-pointer to put the score at 51-50. On the other end of the court, Benson hit two free throws to make it a three-point game. The Warriors got two final shots, a three-point try from senior Kevin Metoyer and a two-point try from senior Michael Herrmann, but neither shot fell, giving Benson a 53-50 victory.
Herrmann led the team with 16 points. Metoyer was right behind him with 15. The 2-1 Warriors move on to play Omaha Northwest Friday, Dec. 13 at 7:15 p.m in the Westside Main Gym.
On the girls side, the Warriors suffered a defeat at the hands of the Bunnies, as well.
Benson got off to a hot start against Westside, and the Warriors were never able to climb back into the game. Benson took the game 69-54, putting Westside at 1-2 on the season.
Senior Marie Matthews led the team with 16 points. The girls move on to play Omaha Northwest Friday, Dec. 13 at 7:15 p.m. in the Westside Main Gym.
