Signing Day: Senior follows in father’s footsteps to fulfill dream

Wednesday, Nov. 13 was National Letter of Intent Signing Day for high school athletes around the country. Westside had four seniors sign with colleges. Wired will be covering one of these athletes for the next few days, giving you the news on where they are going and why. Our first athlete in the series is baseball player Jake Meyers.

For the majority of high school athletes, playing a division one sport, let alone playing at your top choice, isn’t a possibility. But one Westside senior will be achieving both when he plays for the University of Nebraska Lincoln (UNL) baseball team next year, after sigining his letter of intent to the Huskers.

“They’re my dream school, so they were my first offer so I just said ‘Yeah, I’m going there cause that’s my dream school,’” Meyers said.

Meyers, who received interest from other D-I schools like Creighton and Georgia Tech, has family history with the Huskers, which played a part in his decision.

“My dad went there,” Meyers said. “He played baseball there. He works there. Growing up I’ve just always gone to Nebraska sporting events. And I’ve always kind of wanted to be like my dad.”

Further aiding in his decision is his relationship with UNL head coach Darin Erstad.

“Actually, the head coach there played for my dad when he coached there, so I know the head coach really well,” Meyers said. “He’s a good guy, and I’m excited to play for him. [Knowing him] made [my decision] really easy, cause I know he’s not all about sports. He helps you with life, too, so he’s going to help me out.”

Along with knowing the coach, Meyers was able to meet his fellow class of 2014 commits, two of whom are from Nebraska. He said they are “really good guys.”

Meyers is looking forward to playing as early as possible, and knows it will be hard work to reach that level.

Off the field, Meyers said he likes what he’s heard about UNL academically.

“I’ve talked to a lot of people that academically went there, and they’ve said they love it and it really helped them,” Meyers said. “I’m going off of what the majority says, so I’m sure it’ll be good.”
