Softball District Tournament
Coming into the district tournament in Lincoln as the second seed, the softball team went 1-2 in the tournament, losing its last two games to finish in third place.
Thursday, Oct. 10 the team faced No. 3 seed Fremont in its first game of the tournament. The Warriors won the game 9-1 and went on to face the No. 1 seed, Lincoln Southwest. The Warriors played a close game but came up short in a 13-11 loss.
The team went into the losers bracket and faced Fremont for the second time Friday, Oct. 11. With a chance to go to the district championship game on the line, the Warriors lost to Fremont 5-1. With the loss, the softball team failed to qualify for the state tournament. Senior softball player Marie Matthews, who finished the year with a .417 batting average, the third highest on the team, was disappointed in the loss to the same squad the Warriors had beaten a day earlier.
“I mean, it was frustrating that we lost to a team that we had previously beaten twice, but we got out-worked,” Matthews said. “They got hits and made plays and we didn’t. That was the difference.”
Fremont went on to lose 16-1 against Lincoln Southwest in the title game.
Despite the loss and not qualifying for state, Matthews was happy with how the team performed this season, and thinks the team has a good opportunity next year.
“Even though I was disappointed that we lost in districts I was still proud of how far our team has come and how far they will go next year,” Matthews said.
