Westside vs. Fremont Preview

Today, the Westside football team will travel 40 minutes to play Fremont high school, for game No. 4 for the Warriors. The undefeated Warriors come in off of a 45-13 victory against Grand Island, and are ranked No. 2 in the state by the Omaha World Herald, and No. 1 by the Lincoln Journal Star. Fremont is unranked, with a record of 1-2, and coming off of a 42-17 loss to 3-0 Norfolk.
According to head coach Brett Froendt, the keys for Westside to win are similar to last week. Froendt said controlling the line of scrimmage is a priority for the Warriors.
The key to beating Westside according to Fremont head coach Seth McClain is a big defensive performance.
“There’s a reason why they are rated No. 1 in one paper and [No.] 2 in another,” McClain said. “You’ve gotta try to slow down that offense. They have the physicality of a Stanford, but then they go at a tempo of Oregon, so you’ve got to slow them down on first downs.”
The Fremont defense is capable of turning teams over, as it has recovered three fumbles and picked off five passes, but has still allowed two teams to score 42 points.
Offensively, Fremont has turned the ball over 11 times, but poses a major passing threat. The Tigers are averaging 235.3 yards per game passing.
McClain hopes to see the Tigers reach a more balanced attack this week.
“Our offensive line has really got to step it up to give [our quarterback] some time to throw, and we’ve got to open up some holes to get a running game going so we’re not back there just sitting ducks trying to throw the ball every down,” McClain said.
Westside will try to slow the Fremont passing attack by showing multiple defensive sets.
“You look at what they do and show them different looks so the quarterback doesn’t get comfortable with what he wants to try to accomplish,” Froendt said. “If you show them different things, then hopefully it will throw him off balance a little bit, [and you can] get a couple picks. Once you get momentum on defense it’s tough for them to know what to do from that point on.”
Westside may be without senior running back Lane Yates, who injured his foot in the Warriors week two win against Creighton Prep.
The game is tonight at 7 p.m. in Fremont. The theme for the week is “White Out.”
