On Monday the boys baseball team won the district championship against Columbus and are now headed to state. The girls soccer team beat Kearney 3-0 to advance to the state tournament. The girls tennis team is seeded highly going into state next Thursday and Friday.
The baseball team is ranked second in the state and beat Columbus 8 to 0 in the district championship. Senior Will Frei is hopeful that the team will be successful in the state tournament.
“We are really strong in pitching. We have four or five guys that would be the best pitcher for almost any other team in the state. We also have been hitting the ball well heading into districts and will carry that momentum through to state… We’ve been successful so far and need to make sure that we don’t try and change things and do things we’ve never done before. ” said Frei
The team has had high expectations since before the season even started and last years seniors really had an effect on the team.
“We expect to win the state championship. As a team this has been an expectation since before winter workouts. It really came from the senior class that graduated last year. They really helped us grow throughout the summer and coming up short last summer really motivated us this spring.” said Frei
The girls tennis team is the returning state champion and is in the running to win it again. The state tournament is May 16 and 17. This will be Junior McKinney Harwood’s third state appearance and she has high hopes for the team.
“Our strengths are that we have a very good team and everyone has done well throughout the season. We also have been working hard and I think we are very prepared,” said Harwood.
The team lost four girls from last years state team, bringing up four new girls for this years tournament.
“Some of our weaknesses are that we have a lot of new members on our state team so they lack some experience and we haven’t had much practice outdoors this season due to the weather.” said Harwood
Harwood is excited for the state tournament and says “she has a lot to prove again this year.”
The girls soccer team is ranked fourth and has had ups and downs to its season. Coach Nathan Moseley is hopeful that the team can use its mixture of young players and senior leadership to win.
“Every team has it’s strengths and weaknesses. Our strength for us is that we have a strong combination of senior leadership and young talent. The first team we play, Millard West, has a lot of young talent, but not many seniors. This could serve us well in the first game.” Said Moseley.
The girls soccer team plays Millard West at Morrison Stadium on Thursday at 11. If all goes well the girls could lead Westside to their first ever state title in girls soccer.
Each team has been preparing since before the spring season for a chance at the state title and hopefully their hard work pays off.
