Anyone who has attended a Westside football game has seen the mascot “Wallie the Warrior” doing tricks and taking pictures with fans. But who is the person behind the mascot? This past year Senior Cory Cole and Byron Siedler shared the role.
“Being the mascot is actually really fun, you get to be someone who you have never been. Doing this about every game has the teams we have here in a better position. Coming out with the mascot and getting them pumped up for the game is a great feeling, it feels like you are apart of the team!” said Cole
Being the mascot doesn’t just entail putting on a suit and going out into the crowd, Byron and Cole learned how to do tricks with it and learned they would need some security.
“There can be some rough times with people pushing me, or knocking me over, so thats when we increased a little bit of security by my side, because of the damage that we had taken.” said Cole
With Cole and Siedler being seniors, Mr. Kerkman is looking for someone new to take on the tradition, but it may be hard to replace two seniors this dedicated to the mascot.
“I talked to a couple of friends and I talked to Mr. Kerkman, and this lead me to the best sport you could do, and if anyone is interested, they can find me and stop me in the hallways, or just email me to find more out, I can even possibly let you get in the suit for a chance to become apart of the Mascot team” said Cole.
With the mascot tradition being successful, Kerkman is hoping to find someone new to carry it on.
