In Georgia there are still segregated proms in Wilcox County. White students attend one prom, and black students attend an entirely separate prom. The schools have been desegregated, but the community is still divided. The proms are put on by parents and community members, instead of the school. Because of this, they are allowed to make their own requirements for admittance to the dance. But, this year for the first time, students will be able to attend the same prom. Many of the students are glad that there will be an integrated prom. Some students still resent the idea of an integrated prom and demonstrate their dislike by vandalizing prom posters throughout the school.
Last I checked we are living in 2013. I never thought that there would still be such a thing as segregated proms in the United States. It has been a long time since segregation has been allowed in schools, and I would figure it would also spread to the community. But, apparently, I was very wrong. It would be horrible to be a part of a community that still thrived on hate and segregation. And, it’s not just the parents who believe this. The kids are the ones in school vandalizing and rebelling against the new prom. It’s not just something that can be blamed on the older generations who organize the prom, some students are the ones who wanted to keep it that way. They were taught that these things should be segregated, and they are sticking to it.
