Recently elected into the Vatican, Pope Francis, formally known as cardinal Bergoglio from Buenos Aires, was an unexpected choice for the new leader of 1.2 billion Roman Catholics worldwide. He became part of the Jesuit order in 1958 to become a priest. In 1998, he because archbishop of Buenos Aires and then appointed a cardinal by Pope John Paul II in 2001.
This new pope has brought upon many firsts within the Catholic Church. He is the first Jesuit pope that the world has ever seen and the first to ever take the name Francis. He has also been the first pope from a Latin American country, where most of the previous popes have come from Europe. During the last conclave in 2005, Pope Francis was said to be the runner up to former Pope Benedict the XVI.
In contrast to the previous Pope, Francis is said to be a more modest man and doesn’t want the traditional royal treatment that normally comes with being a pope. Many say that he will be the beginning of much change and reform within the Catholic Church and bring upon a more positive vision within the church. By picking the name Francis, the pope suggests that he will be paying much attention to missionary work and issues dealing with poverty. It will be exciting to see what he has in store for the Roman Catholic Church in his upcoming papal years.
