Twitter is a popular social media site used by celebrities, businesses, and now schools. District 66, Westside sports teams, and journalism publications have turned to the site for updating games, events, and snow days.
TV Production and Media Convergence instructor Matt Rasgorshek uses Twitter to stay connected with his students.
“I use twitter for the classroom because kids don’t look at their First Class as much as they need to. However, my policy for that twitter feed is that I don’t follow any students.”
Westside Wired (@westsidewired) tweets game scores, awards, newsworthy information, and snow days. The district (@Westside66) also tweets snow days along with district-wide activities and accomplishments. The girls soccer team (@GirlsSoccer_WHS) also uses Twitter to provide news and scores straight from the team according to head coach Nathan Moseley.
The team uses Twitter “mainly just to keep parents up to date on scores and updates,” said Moseley. “Also, if there’s a cancellation, most of the team is on Twitter anyway, so it’s an easier way to let them know.”
The social media site is becoming more popular amongst school organizations because of the exposure it provides for students.
“It’s just one more way to get information out to the kids,” said Rasgorshek.
