So if you have not figured out, I like to write about things related to technology. I feel that it predicts the future and will be what employs many people later on in life. This year, there have been many advancements within technology. Many have been made by Google. What I think is one of the most impressive and borderline Star Trek innovations this year so far has been Google Glasses. TheVerge.com writer Joshua Topolsky wrote an article about what it felt like wearing these glasses. I am going to focus on the implications that this technology may apply.
Right now, cell phones are distractions. We have to continuously make a decision to glance down and take out our phone in order to check a text message or respond to it. We are also in a phase where people are inventing peripherals that try to close the gap that is created between the phone and us. Inventions like the Pebble, a smart watch that pushes updates conveniently to your wrist, or even Siri, which helps you send messages easier. One of the most out of the box inventions is Google Glass.
I think Google Glass is a starting spot for a revolutionary branch of technology that could eventually define how we perceive technology. It is no novelty device. Like I said, there is a gap present between our technology and ourselves. Google Glass almost completely closes that gap. Google Glass allows for you to view messages, take calls, take pictures, and send text messages when your virtually on-the-go. Right now, it is at the expense of looking slightly dumb when you’re talking to yourself, but that will diminish as the technology advances.
Right now, the functionality is slim. But, like I said, this is just a starting point for what it can turn into. There are many branches of applications that could be made by developers that would make Glasses much better. Setting a facebook status, giving constant reviews of restaurants as you walk down a street, virtual augmentation used for games. The potential that Google Glasses hold is immense.
To add to the functionality of Glasses, Google has also started to offer a service called Google Now. Google Now is similar to Siri but it also adds a layer that learns your patterns and tries to give you information before you even ask for it. This means it can learn when you need to be at work, and give you a traffic report to tell you when you should plan on leaving. It can also give you score updates and many other things. If this were to be coupled with Google Glasses, the user of Glasses would suddenly have a personal assistant that is always with you.
