There is a long standing history of athletes in the public eye doing things to jeopardize their relationships with sponsors and fans. OJ on trial for murder, Kobe on trial for rape, Michael Phelps smoking weed, the list really does go on and on. There is a new addition to the list now, Oscar Pistorius, also knows as the blade runner, has been charged with shooting and killing his girlfriend in South Africa.
Awkwardly enough, Pistorius has an internet ad with Nike that has the words, “I am the bullet in the chamber” plastered on the bottom of a picture of him. Needless to say Nike has already pulled this advertisement and have not gone on to say whether or not they had any plans in the future for his sponsorship.
Other athletes that Nike have recently dropped are Lance Armstrong, Michael Vick, and Tiger Woods all for falling out of the positive light of the public eye. Although there job is to perform athletically, a large part of most of these athletes income is their sponsorship opportunities. The financial hits that all of these athletes have taken from losing there sponsorship are not taken lightly, and Pistorius is no exception.
